Gladiator & Hunger Games.

While reading the Hunger Games a while back I would notice parallels to Roman government and the games held in the coliseum. I read an article the other day where Suzanne Collins discussed her inspiration for the books from studying the Roman empire and seeing her dad fight in Vietnam and suffer PTSD. I was watching Gladiator today and it amazed me how brilliantly the Hunger Games books are written.

The Arena: Just like the coliseum the gladiators or tributes are raised from the ground up, literally, to fight to the death in an arena full of surprises and other competitors. The last one standing is claimed a victor and praised by the Government or Capitol.

Tributes or Gladiators: Brought in from the outside providence's or district's, they fight to the death as entertainment for the capitol citizens or citizens of Rome. Often they are trained and have a special skill or weapon they are familiar with.

President Snow or Emperor: Figure head of their governments who loves to hold all the power and finds the most enjoyment in the games. He loves to be loved by the people and gives them the impression of giving them what they want.

Roman Senate or Capital people: Adorned is crazy wigs, jewelry, and attire. Love to be entertained by the games and oblivious to the hardships outside their own city.

I could go on for hours about the parallels and Hunger Games in general, so feel free to comment, e-mail, or stop by for a visit. Would love to hear your thoughts!
