Amazing Volunteer Opportunity

In my Abuse and Neglect class we had a guest speaker from the Child and Family Support Center come in and tell us about what they do and services they offer the community. What an awesome program! They are a non-profit organization that rely solely on volunteers and fundraising to run the programs. Their goal is to strengthen families and protect children. They offer parenting classes, family enhancement classes, healthy family classes, and a toll free crisis hotline to help improve parenting skills, strengthen relationships, and provide support. They also offer children's classes and run a good-touch/bad-touch program in the schools that educate children about sexual abuse in an age appropriate manner. Something that I found really neat as well is the crisis/respite nursery they have. It offers "time-outs" for parents in need of a break who have little or no support. The nursery also provides a place for children in time of a crisis.

Well here is the best part...I am going to be working there! I am so excited! The speaker mentioned they are always looking for extra help so I went and spoke to her after class and will begin volunteering in a month! (I have to wait for background check to clear, since I have lived in more than one state it takes a month to process.) This is an amazing opportunity for me to serve and is right up my ally and goes along with my major. I have missed working with kids since I left the daycare back in August and now will have the chance to be around them. I love the fact that I will be helping kids who really need it and families who need that extra support. Child abuse is so prevalent in our society (1 in 3 girls, 1 in 5 boys are affected by abuse), and programs like this are trying to make a difference. I am so lucky to be apart of such a wonderful program soon!

In case anyone else is interested in volunteering I posted the information for ya :) They are always looking for volunteers and what an amazing opportunity this is!

  1. That is very cool! As a mom I know you can always use a break! I am lucky enough to get them because of a wonderful husband and other family members! I just don't know how people who don't have the support do it! What a wonderful way to be able to give back!
